Des chercheurs américains préconisent d’intégrer des exercices de fitness et d’aérobic intenses dans les traitements des patients souffrant de la maladie de Parkinson, responsable de l’endommagement progressif du système nerveux. « Plus le patient transpire, a chaud, et est fatigué, plus l’effet sera protecteur sur le cerveau », affirme le Dr J. Eric Ahlskog, neurobiologiste et auteur du « Nouveau Livre de traitement de maladie de Parkinson.

Parmi les activités favorables, l’elliptique et la marche rapide. Les exercices de stretching et d’équilibre pourront quant à eux diminuer les sensations de rigidité des muscles, de mouvements ralentis, de troubles de l’équilibre et de la posture, symptômes caractéristiques de la maladie de Parkinson.

Les chercheurs ont montré que les exercices d’aérobic libèrent des petites protéines dans le cerveau . La pratique entretient les connexions cérébrales et empêche le rétrécissement et vieillissement du cerveau provoqués par la maladie.

Pour freiner efficacement les effets de la maladie, la pratique doit être régulière (deux à trois fois par semaine) et progressive et associée au bon dosage du traitement médicamenteux anti-parkinsonien, la carbidopa-lévodopa.
