C’est la découverte de Salvatore Cerchio, directeur de l’African Aquatic Conservation Fund’s Cetacean Program, et ses collègues qui ont récemment annoncé dans la revue Endangered Species Research, la découverte d’une nouvelle espèce de baleine bleue.
Enregistrés pour la première fois à Madagascar, en 2017, les chants de ce géant des mers ont été signalés dans diverses régions de l’Océan Indien.
Selon les chercheurs, alors que les caractéristiques des fréquences du chant de cette nouvelle variété de baleines bleues semblent similaires à ceux d’autres espèces déjà répertoriées, après quelques examens approfondis, il s’est avéré qu’ils sont en fait différents.
Après leur signalisation au large de Madagascar, ces chants ont également été enregistrés à l’ouest de la mer d’Oman (Moyen-Orient), au large des côtes et enfin dans l’archipel des Chagos, un groupe d’îles situé au milieu de l’Océan Indien. Environ 3 500 kilomètres séparaient les endroits où ces cris ont été enregistrés.
De plus, une poignée d’heures après l’enregistrement de ces chants, les baleines bleues ont été repérées près des côtes d’Oman.
