Le verdict est enfin tombé : Joe Biden a été élu 46e président des Etats-Unis. Et sa colistière Kamala Harris est devenue vice-présidente des États-Unis. C’est la première fois dans l’histoire qu’une femme, afro-américaine, est élue à un tel poste à la Maison Blanche.
Le candidat démocrate avait fait face à d’énormes pressions lorsqu’il s’est allié à une femme de couleur : « Il n’y a pas de vaccin contre le racisme », avait déclaré Kamala Harris lors de son discours d’acceptation à la vice-présidence. « Nous devons faire le travail pour George Floyd, pour Breonna Taylor et pour la vie de tant d’autres, trop nombreux pour les nommer. »
Agée de 56 ans, cette fille d’immigrants (sa mère est indienne et son père jamaïcain) a déjà franchi plusieurs étapes historiques tout au long de sa carrière. Diplômée de l’Université d’Howard et de l’Université de Californie, cette native d’Oakland a travaillé pour le bureau du procureur de la ville de San Francisco, spécialisé dans les affaires d’agression sexuelle d’enfants.
De 2004 à 2010, elle a été la première femme afro-américaine à être élue procureur du district de San Francisco. En 2011, elle est devenue et c’est encore une première, procureure générale de Californie. Et depuis 2016, elle représentait la Californie au sénat américain.
Suite à la victoire de Joe Biden, Kamala Harris a déclaré : « Je suis peut-être la première femme à occuper ce bureau… je ne serai pas la dernière. »
